The artificial hip joint replaces an amputated hip joint. A device that replaces an amputated (removed) part of the body is called prosthesis. Like when you buy and use anything without knowing how it works, you can also live with an artificial joint without knowing how it works. Chances are, however, that both your thing of use and your new hip will last longer if you have some knowledge about how they are working and how to maintain them.
